Welcome ~ Bienvenidos
Welcome to Mrs. Marshall-Wicker’s Spanish class! Students may call me Profesora (Teacher). This is how my students in Costa Rica referred to their teachers. Learning a second language is challenging and rewarding. It takes time and effort, so expect to practice every day. Your participation, cooperation, discipline, and attitude are very important to creating an atmosphere conducive to learning a language.
Why should I learn spanish?
Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world in terms of native speakers, after only Mandarin Chinese. Spanish-speaking people are also the fastest growing minority in the United States. In our globally competitive world, it is becoming increasingly important for each person to learn new languages in order to communicate effectively and be globally aware.
Every occupation is clamoring for employees who can speak Spanish. Doctors and nurses need to communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients, teachers with their Spanish-speaking students, businesses with their Spanish-speaking customers, business owners with their Spanish-speaking employees, lawyers with their Spanish-speaking clients- the list goes on and on. If you can speak Spanish, you have a job!
Studies have shown that "a multilingual brain is nimbler, quicker, better able to deal with ambiguities, resolve conflicts and even resist Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia*." Learning another language is good for your brain!
All of these reasons and more are why universities strongly encourage students to take at least two world language courses. Most importantly though, immersing yourself in another culture is a fascinating, enriching experience that opens your eyes and changes you for the better for the rest of your life.
