special events & Projects
2023 - 2024
In September, all levels of Spanish students enjoyed the Fiesta hosted by the Hispanic League of Winston-Salem! Then in October, Spanish 5 hosted a Fiesta of their own at school for everyone to attend!
In December, Spanish 3 and 5 went to the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet at Wake Forest! They got to see music and dances performed by professionals from all over the Spanish-speaking world. At the end, two of our students got to go up on stage!
For Día de los Muertos at the end of October / beginning of November, Spanish 5 made a giant ofrenda in the library and invited classes from around the school to come tour it and learn about it!
Spanish 5 created hashtags for movements that they feel are extremely important and that represent their identity. Then, they went thrifting with Art 3 to find objects to go along with their hashtags. See pictures below.

Homecoming Spirit Week 2023!
2022 - 2023
The Spanish teachers enjoyed dressing up for each occasion this year!
In the 6th and highest level of Spanish offered at West Stokes, AP Spanish Language and Culture, students did creative projects on art & beauty, science & technology, and global challenges. Seniors displayed some of these projects at the Senior Night of the Arts Exhibition in May. AP Spanish students also participated in a Book Club where they read a book of their choosing (see some of the books they chose below) and met the last day of each month to discuss what they read and words they learned. After the AP Exam, they got to finish watching their favorite show (Gran Hotel), play Spanish scrabble, do another bracket of Spanish songs that we called May Madness, and take a field trip to a Cuban restaurant to try authentic Cuban cuisine. ¡Qué divertido!

All Spanish classes did a Secret Santa gift exchange in December 2021! The big reveal was when they described their person in Spanish and we all guessed who it was. We also read the short stories that Spanish 3 wrote for their Chapter 4 project and we read "'Twas Nochebuena", a Spanish version of "'Twas The Night Before Christmas."
In November 2021, all upper level Spanish classes took a field trip to the zoo! They had just learned vocabulary about animals and how to say the names of all of the countries in the world in Spanish.
In October 2021, Spanish 1 and 3 students researched and wrote about famous Spanish-speakers who have died and made ofrendas to honor them for Day of the Dead. They are displaying the pictures of their ofrendas below. Día de los Muertos is not a sad or scary time but a happy time to celebrate, remember, and honor the lives of loved ones.
Rather than making ofrendas, Spanish 5 and 7 researched the culture of death in their specific Spanish-speaking countries since it varies from country to country.

Spanish 1 also did a "Fit Check" where they labeled each part of their outfit after learning clothing and color vocabulary. In Chapters 3 and 4, they learned about places in the city, transportation, family, likes and dislikes, how to say what they're going to do, and how to describe people, places, and objects.
